Akira (6)Author: Simon B. Wow..... wait. Wow... That's what it'll feel like when you first see Akira. There are simply no words to describe it. It is absolutely the BEST anime movie ever produced. Even Ghost in the shell is nothing when compared to Akira. Akira centers around Kaneda and Tetsuo, two friends. One night, when fighting another motorcycle gang, Tetsuo has an encounter with #26, one out of the three "kids" with great psychokinetic powers. He is taken by the army and tests are performed on him. Meanwhile, Neo Tokyo is in a chaotic situation - riots everywhere. Kaneda and a group of revolutionaries including Kei, try to save Tetsuo. Meanwhile, Kaneda gets to know more about Akira, a being with great power. After his encounter with #26, the will to find, revive, and harness the power of Akira awoke in Tetsuo. That's it. I don't want to spoil it all for you. For an 80's film, the animation is great. The plot is confusing, so you might want to watch the movie more than once to grasp it. Among serious anime otaku, there is the myth that if you can understand Akira without anyone explaining it to you, you're a great anime expert... There aren't that many characters in the anime, but the number is sufficient enough. Akira was THE anime that introduced Western (American, British, French...) crowds to good anime movies. Any anime fan SHOULD watch it. There is no European OR American animation that can remotely rival it. Heck, there aren't that many JAPANESE animes that can rival Akira. Overall Rating: 10
