Battle AngelAuthor: Neo Rasa Running time: 60 minutes Battle Angel is based off of the old Battle Angel Alita (Gunnm, literally Gun Dream in Japan) manga that was translated and published in the US throughout the early nineties. The two episode anime is an adaptation of two of the major Battle Angel Alita manga storylines (there are nine in total). It takes place in Scrap Heap City, the dumping grounds for Zalem, a huge towering mega city reminiscent of Cloud City from The Empire Strikes Back. Scrap Heap City is populated with bounty hunters, merchants, cybernetic cannibalistic psychopaths and organ theives who try to make a buck by stealing people's spines and selling them to transplant specialists in Zalem. The story begins when a brilliant cyborg doctor named Ido is rummaging through a junk heap and stumbles upon the still living remains of a young female cyborg. Ido is soon able to rebuild the cyborg and basically treats her like a daughter. Soon Gally (the name Ido gave her) finds out that he is actually a Hunter-Warrior, a member of the local bounty hunter guild contracted by the Factory (big corrupt corporation based in Zalem kinda place). After saving Ido's life and pracitally destroying his opponent in a battle, Gally is inspired to become a bounty hunter as well but Ido is hesitant to let her. The story is much better and in depth than the small sampling I've given here. Overall this is a fantastic anime with lots of great imagery, fluid animation, great dialogue, great music (though there isn't much of it...one part seems to be taken from the original Terminator theme song), incredible direction, and well developed characters. My favorite aspect of this anime was the great job the characters, imagery, and music did at immersing you into Gally's world. By the time it's over you get the feeling you've been to hell and back through Scrap Heap City and you leave it with a sense of hope for the characters despite the events that happen to them. The ONLY complaint I have about this anime is that they didn't make more of them. Weird stuff: Lots of names were changed from the original manga and the overall look of Greiwicia was changed a lot, though he still retains his cool razor sharp finger weapons. Also, there was a fight scene in the bounty hunter bar between Gally (Alita in the manga) and several of the bounty hunters but they took it out of the anime. This was kind of for the better since it helps to keep up the pace of what's going on (when you see it you'll know what I mean). Overall Rating: 10
