Berserk (2)Author: Johnnygnumonik Berzerk is a medieval fantasy series of 25 episodes which packs a big punch... The good: 1. Realism, and for a semi-fantasy genre, it's most impressive. The main character faces death time and time again, never giving the impression that he's invincible. Sure, he wields a sword (in the later episodes) that is virtually as heavy as a suit of full-plate armor, and taller than the hulk of meat that he becomes in his adult depictions. But then again, he practices timelessly to master speed with this weapon. 2. Thoughtfulness. A blend of philosophy, psychology, and ethics unparalleled by any other anime I've viewed so far. The "what is the purpose of life?" question is well incorporated into the background of each character, and any modern person can relate to much of the wise and not-so-wise answers that are given throughout the span of the series. 3. Animation. 80's style, lots of stills, close-ups, and flash scenes, but they are all impeccably set up and always give the right impression. The stills of this anime are especially emotion-laden, and I haven't seen anything quite like it. Character design is odd at times, but consistent. 4. Music. When I'm not viewing an anime series/film, I have every song from the Berzerk soundtrack running on my MP3 player. If there were a soundtrack CD, I'd buy it. Yes, the music is mostly rock, but nevertheless goes very well with the medieval setting, especially Gettsu's theme... 5. The plot. It keeps you hooked, literally. If you watch past the third episode, and suddenly feel the urge to go to the bathroom, you've yet a few hours before your brain will allow your legs to walk you away. You will not stop until you see the end of the series. The Bad: 1. The End. Aaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh!!! Why, WHY IN WHATEVER CREATIVE OMNIPOTENT FORCE'S NAME IS OUT THERE DOES IT HAVE TO END LIKE THAT? I will not give it away, but I really hated the ending. It makes you want so much more, which you'll probably never get, unless they release a new series that remains truthful to the plot and style of the original. 2. The Beginning. You'll realize this only after you've seen the whole series, but the beginning is in fact the end. Don't get me wrong, it's a great beggining that swings you into the action/violence type of the series, but also gives the wrong impression about the importance of fantasy elements within the series. But it's a terrible ending, as I've already said, and since the beggining is also the end, that's quite sad. Overall, this anime actually got me thinking about my life, my hopes and aspirations, the sacrifices that will need to be made, the moments of glory to be savoured, and the moments of failure to cope with. At the same time, it was unusually entertaining in a very serious, deep, and often grim way. Thus, despite all my concerns with it, I must rate it... Overall Rating: 10
