Blue Gender

Okay, first of all, it's translated by FUNimation, the same people who did Dragonball/Z/GT and Yu-Yu Hakusho, but it's vastly different from those other series. While the Dragonball and Yu-Yu series are fantasy-based about people with supernatural powers, BG is purely science fiction.

So there's this guy named Yuji, a guy from the 20th Century who was cryogenically frozen and awoken twenty-some-odd years later to find Earth has been devastated by giant mutant bugs called Blue (Why are they called the Blue? Your guess is as good as mine). He's immediately drafted into the army because he has some special genes in him. He meets up with a variety of characters like the beautiful but semi-heartless Marlene. However, with very few exceptions, everybody whom they meet on their travels end up dead.

In short, think Starship Troopers meets Samurai Jack meets Evangelion meets one of Tomino's series (Tomino, the guy who did Gundam) would be a good way to describe this series. Which means it contains a man trying to adjust to futuristic surroundings, lots of giant bug battles, conspiracies, and 3/4 of the cast die by the end of the series.

I don't think this is one of the best animes I've seen. However, I don't think its entirely bad. The series starts out great, and really contrasts the kind-hearted Yuji with the (expletive deleted) Marlene. It's definitely not kid stuff. But if you're into bug-shooting-bloodshed, then definitely check it out. However, I'm not interested in that sort of thing so I'm going to give it a low rating.

Overall Rating: 4
