Brain PoweredAuthor: Mark McPherson I have heard many people say that Brain Powered is one of Yoshiyuki Tomino's worst animes ever. After watching the series, I can't but wonder just why everyone keeps on saything this. Brain Powered, as a mecha anime, is pretty darn good. For one thing, all the mecha are 100% organic. They aren't built or rolled out. They're BORN. So they are actually live beings and not just mechanical robots. I will admit the story seems a bit confusing at times, but as someone who has watched almost every complex anime there is out there, this title shouldn't be too hard to figure out. The story is about two sides: Novis, Noah, and Orphen. Orphen is an underwater spaceship that will apparently threaten humanity and the Novis Noah is a ship that actually has an organic engine. The series basically starts with an Orphen pilot named Yuu Isami meeting a girl named Hime who revives a Brain Powered (nicknamed Brains). A year later, he defects and joins Novis Noah to stop Orphen and the story takes off from there. Many people have said the animation is a mixed bag. The art is good but there are a couple of areas where the animators try to cut corners. However, the CG in the series isn't overused and only appears in a few episodes. The music is by far the best aspect of the show. Featuring some of Yoko Kanno's best work yet, everything from the start to finish sounds great. And instead of using hard rock for the battles, they switch over to a more slightly-intense track. Overall, if you're looking for a different kind of mecha anime that breaks away from the norm, seek out Brain Powered. It is worth it. Overall Rating: 9 |
