The Case Files of Young Kindaichi TV Series

Date review submitted: December 2, 2001

As anyone might guess, this anime involves mysteries and crime in Japan, and since such a genre is not so common, despite its considerable popularity, one would seldom find this in a video store. Whether or not this anime is your cup of tea, it’s always worth a good try to see it for yourself.

The protagonist of the stories (or cases, as the entire series is divided into), young Hajime Kindaichi, appears to be no different from an average high school boy on the verge of being a drop out. Scoring zip for tests, being inattentive in class and goes AWOL (Absent Without Official Leave) during lessons, teachers and classmates alike hold little faith in him. However, few realized that he is actually the grandson of the great detective, Kosuke Kindaichi, who was renowned throughout society a generation ago, and has an amazing IQ of 180.

In Kindaichi’s eventful life, he faces seemingly endless murder cases wherever he goes, with the suspects hidden within the groups of strangers whom he encounters and planning yet another murder. Having inherited his grandfather’s talents for solving crime, Kindaichi treats each case as a challenge to his wits and is determined to apprehend the criminals masterminding them. Dragged along for the ride is Kindaichi’s childhood friend Miyuki Nanase and the not-so-smart police inspector, Kenmochi.

Strictly put, this is not an anime for kids. In almost every episode there are deaths and corpses lying around, but nothing that would make your stomach turn. There are usually three to four episodes, or files, to a case, with the fourth as its conclusion, with Kindaichi being ultimately victorious as he shows how each mystery is solved.

The storyline for the series is fine, with the violence and blood being necessary for its plot. Occasionally there is some sexual teasing from Kindaichi himself, but what else do you expect from your not-so-average teenager with hormones? (Don’t answer that.) The anime actually allows the audience to help themselves at guessing the criminal’s true identity from the clues that are presented throughout each case. As the story progresses, several cases actually strengthen the relationship between Kindaichi and Nanase, the latter having a not so obvious reason for taking a liking toward the young detective. And her friends wonder why she refuses anyone else but him, with Kindaichi being a near total failure and herself as an honours student.

The music is solid, bringing its intended effect for the audience and increases the tension when something important is around the corner. The opening and ending themes are, of course, catchy and suitable enough for the anime’s genre.

The animation is fairly good, with attention to detail and thrown together with sounds that help to bring out the overall situation for all to see.

Among the few bad sides of this anime is that the cases get a tad predictable after some time, although the methods of killing and getting away with it gets more ingenious (it actually makes up somewhat for the cases’ predictability). Another would be that the music maybe is a touch too strong for its intended impact in certain scenes.

The proof of its popularity? The large number of cases in the anime (some 56 cases and a total of 148 files), a couple of animated movies, and drama serializations of the anime itself, with popular young Japanese celebrities as the story’s main characters.

At any rate, it is a good anime with an interesting plot, and should be given consideration into watching it.
