Cowboy Bebop (2)

If there is such a thing as heaven on earth, then the Cowboy Bebop series is it. There is so much to love, and so little to hate. It's a dream I did not want to wake up from. It is indeed, a visionary masterpiece. Unlike some anime, the series does not follow one key plot throughout, although you are reminded of the name "Julia" every now and then. A name that will, in the end haunt you, because of the vivid story-telling.

Cowboy Bebop follows four (five if you count the dog, Ein), bounty hunters. There's Spike Spiegal, (the main character), Jet Black, (Spike's good friend and mechanic type), Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, (the hacker and comedic relief), and Faye Valantine, (the fan-service... and er... compulsive gambler). Oh, and there is the said dog, Ein. He's a mysterious data dog, who's worth a fortune, he also becomes attached to Ed. There is a very large amount of supporting cast, altough most of them don't make it into more then one episode. One who comes back for more is named Vicious, and that he is. He's a no-holds-barred villian with a taste for blood.

The cast isn't the only thing this series has going for it, it also has excellent writing. One line that especially got my attention is from "Jupiter Jazz Part 1". A character named Gren is talking to Faye, and he states, "You say you don't need comrade's... But im attracted to that word... To the point of tears". Some may find it corny and melodramatic, but it hits all my buttons.

The animation is also something to be raved. It's among the most detailed I've seen. You can tell that a lot of work went into a shot, even though a lot of the backgrounds are used only once in the series. It also uses some CGI, though I didn't care for that. But the hand-drawn animation was right up to par with Akira. The score is compromised of a plethora of different genres. Jazz, metal, rock, you name it, although a lot of it is jazzy. Furthermore, it's composed by Yoko Kanno. What more could you want?

Overall, this is quite an incredible series. My only peeves are that Faye's character wasn't very likable until you got to know her a little bit, and there wasn't enough of Ein trying to walk in zero gravity. If you have not seen it, (I don't see how that's possible), rent the first season, and if you like it, you'll love everything else, so I reccomend buying the box set... You'll be getting the super-keen OST one with it. Happy watching.
