Cowboy Bebop (3)Author: Jupiter Jazz Somewhere beyond our solar system, a ship cruises through the fabric of space, its crew searching for fortune and adventure. What they get are answers to questions long forgotten and a friendship forged from the most unlikely of circumstances. Everything about Cowboy Bebop oozes quality. This anime could very well have changed cynical pre-conceptions of anime being nothing more than brain-dead stimulus for teenagers. From the musical score by the incalculably talented Yoko Kanno, to the animation standard and script writing, Cowboy Bebop deserves the accolades it's received. The first episode introduces us to Spike and Jet, our "heroic" duo out to catch the most lucrative bounties in the universe. Our heroic duo are nothing more than human. Spike on the best of days is a slob with nothing more on his mind than a good meal, whilst Jet serves (unwillingly) as the glue which will inevitably hold all of our cast together. With the addition of Ein the wonder dog, Faye Valentine the unscrupulous, tragic lost soul and the comic enigma that is radical Edward later on through the series, the plot is cleverly arched, but not so much as to isolate those only joining us halfway through the series. Never have I encountered such a collection of well thought out characters in an anime, particularly Faye Valentine, who could proudly be held as being the only strong representation of femininity in anime for quite some time. As the series progresses and winds to an end, the group slowly disbands, as the past creeps up on our crew, with the gift of life or that of death to be had. Each character makes their decision, with tragic and sometimes heart-wrenching consequences. Special note goes to Yoko Kanno for her work on the soundtrack. I'm sure most anime fans would agree that it never felt like anything other than perfect, with the music sometimes setting the scene or even telling the story. With much more to ramble on about, I force myself to cut myself short and say this: buy it, rent it, watch on TV, steal it, I don't care, just watch this anime, from start to finish, to understand that this is a standard that very few American productions can achieve. Take stock in the fact that Cowboy Bebop is your bastion for anime. Overall Rating: 9
