If "Akira" raised the bar for anime, then "Dead Leaves" grabs that bar and laughs manically as it breaks it over its knee. You'll find no starry-eyed well-endowed school girls her, or body building super heroes firing beams of light from their hands, no sir. What you will find is a frantic mind-blowing eye-popping roller coaster ride of ultra-violence and insanity.

In what little plot exists, a pair of strangers find themselves without clothes or memories on the outskirts of the metropolis of the Japan of the future. Retro is a loud crude dude, who is handy with an uzi and has a TV for a head. Pandy is a cool, confident chick with a taste that's early 90's rock band and some killer kung-fu. After a violent rampage throughout the city for food, clothes, and ammunition - killing more cops than you can shake a fist at - Retro and Pandy are arrested and sent to a prison complex in what remains of the moon, now mere chunks of rock called Dead Leaves. They stage a rebellion among the hybrid-mutant prisoners, fighting the cops, the psychopathic prison guards, and the warden, whose mind is made of children's stories and may know something about Pandy's past.

With characters that appear to have leapt out of Joaquin Vasquez's mind while on acid, and a barely-there story line that is almost unnecessary, this is one wild ride. Running at a woefully short 50 minutes, it's just long enough to bate your appetite for more. If you're looking for something wild, mindless, and off-the-wall crazy, you need look no further. Like the creator himself said in the commentary on the DVD, "don't take it too seriously". All I can promise is it's like nothing else you'll see in anime today. The rating is +17, which means strong scenes of violence, sexuality, and profanity.
